Antony Gormley

BODY AND LIGHT AND OTHER DRAWINGS 1990-96, INDEPENDENT ART SPACE, LONDON, ENGLAND, 1996

28 November - 21 December 1996

This exhibition featured a number of recent drawings. These drawings evoke the darkness held within Gormley's sculptures, whilst exposing it to a wider imaginative context. These small, intense, black and white works, executed in the six years prior to this exhibition, relentlessly investigate the body's condition in relation to the spaces of nature and the constructions of the built world. The diluted dark pigment becomes a fluid ground from which forms emerge, transform, and dissolve. These atmospheric works evoke how it feels to be a receiver and transmitter within a field of sensations, suggesting that the body is as much a part of an elemental environment in flux, as it is defined by its own horizon of articulated experience.
