Antony Gormley

NUIT BLANCHE, PALAIS D'IENA, PARIS, FRANCE, 2012

For one night only, on the 6th October 2012, Antony Gormley exhibited a single site-specific installation in the Palais d'Iena.

The work, entitled UNLIMITED BODY (2012), was then reconfigured for a group exhibition on view at the Palais from the 13 - 24 October 2012.

Describing the installation, Gormley has said: 

'The installation UNLIMITED BODY uses the repeated columned cubes of the first floor of the Palais d'Iena to consider the body as architecture and architecture as the body's condition. The rectangular, cellular elements of a standing, lying and crouching body produced in plaster are distributed over the entire space, making and unmaking larger than life-size human forms. Orthogonal to the building, the blocks are placed singularly or in groups within the buildings' repeated grid. The constructed, complete forms are stacked or cantilevered and anatomy translated into tectonic indeterminacy. Throughout the 24 hours of Nuit Blanche, the three works will extend over the entire space, after which point they will be re-assembled in two of the cubes. Especially conceived for this exhibition, UNLIMITED BODY consciously plays with the natural light that floods the space and engages with the repeated structures of the "Hypostyle".'
