THE SCULPTURE SHOW was the largest exhibition of work by living sculptors ever held in England. It filled the Hayward and Serpentine Galleries, and stretched beyond their walls to the South Bank and Kensington Gardens. This marked the first time that both the Arts Council's London galleries and the spaces surrounding them have been used for a single event. In gathering together so much contemporary work, some of it on a colossal scale, this exhibition offered a unique opportunity to see what was happening in sculpture at that time. On display were Gormley's NATURAL SELECTION (1981) and THREE PLACES (1983).
