DOMAIN FIELD, GARAGE CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY CULTURE, MOSCOW, 2009

17 July - 02 September 2009

Originally commissioned by BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in the UK, DOMAIN FIELD (2003) consists of 287 sculptures in its total form. Volunteers aged from two to eighty-five years were moulded in plaster by teams of specially trained staff. These moulds were then used to construct the individual sculptures by welding the steel elements together inside each mould. Each piece was constructed from stainless steel bars in eight different lengths. The work needs to be inhabited by the living bodies of the viewers. It is their motion through the piece that makes the work.

Speaking about DOMAIN FIELD, Gormley has said:

'The bodies in DOMAIN FIELD are abstract but nevertheless relate to a real person in time. They are antennae, evoking an attitude while calling for some empathic projection from the viewer as he or she passes through the field. The sculptures call for what they lack: movement, thought, feeling, life. They call upon our conscience, our feeling, our movement, and we become part of the work.'
