Describing the work, Gormley has said:

'To act in time and be acted on by time. 

My job is to get as close to matter as possible. I try to reunite any dislocated piece of it with its origins. Thus, I start with ready-formed entities: objects that are the products of either natural or cultural formation, and attempt to represent them to the world in such a way that the relationship becomes active - not as isolated entities but as earth above ground.'

TWO STONES (1979-81) is one of three sculptures commissioned for Singleton Village, Ashford, Kent. The work was sited for two months on the lawn of the Serpentine Gallery prior to its permanent siting in Singleton.
