NEW SCULPTURE, SALVATORE ALA GALLERY, NEW YORK, USA, 1984
14 April - 19 May 1984
The work in this exhibition deals with issues of existence through the use of Gormley's body: building up moulds from layers of plaster, fibreglass and finally, lead. Sheets of lead are tautly beaten over the generalized form and soldered together along strict vertical and horizontal axes. The effect is a combination of substantial presence and an intimation of a space held within; sometimes accentuated by holes cut at critical points - for example - the mouth, eyes, or penis. These hollow lead men are powerful explorations of the relationships between inner states of being and the outer world, and suggest, through the particularity of their postures, that the bdoy is a place where mind and matter form each other.
This exhibition included PEER (1984), THREE CALLS: PASS CAST AND PLUMB (1983-84), ADDRESS (1984), PROOF (1984) and FILL (1984).
