FIVE WORKS, SERPENTINE GALLERY, LONDON, ENGLAND, 1987
28 February - 29 March 1987
An exhibition of five works: HEART (1987), ROOM II (1987), FULL BOWL (1977-78), THREE THOUGHTS (1984-85) and VEHICLE (1987). Four of these works were exhibited indoors - one sculpture in each of the Serpentine's four galleries - and one work, VEHICLE, was exhibited outside. These works aim to provide 'vessels' for the imagination. In ROOM, Gormley has used the form of a building; in VEHICLE, that of an aeroplane. The image of the glider is for him an image filled with the kind of freedom that the imagination should have. Implicit in all the work on show was the idea that they are empty shells which only have meaning when inhabited by the participatroy imagination of the viewer.
