TOUCHSTONE, 1978 - 1982

Starting with a river stone found in Cumbria, I was trying to activate the skin of a found stone by carving concentric lines around its surface.

This continued into meandering lines with SKIN II and then into the regularly spaced lines of REPLACED ROCK, which was inserted, to half its height, into the floor.

This linear activation developed with the TOUCHSTONES, where the outlines of my hands were repeated both within and without the silhouette to cover the entire surface. This idea was later translated into HEAVY STONES, a number of Portland and black basalt stones with a single outline of my hand and arms where the stone had been lifted.
