BOX WORKS, 1987 - 2002

I wanted to give an architectural frame to thought and use the lead box as a module. The box is one foot square, using this old Imperial English measurement that refers to the body.

The first box work I made was JOY AND KNOWLEDGE, an open translucent vessel that connects with an absolutely dark lead cube through a bridge that joins a square lead to a round fibreglass tube.

Over a five-year period, I made four sets of double BOX WORKS. In each, one box is pierced with holes that refer to bodily perceptions - the other is completely closed and made to support an alabaster or resin organ. The heart and the brain are made of resin; the testicles and kidneys are made from two different kinds of alabaster.
