DRIFT is a lightweight structure that exists on the cusp between a drawing and a thing. It was conceived of as a three-dimensional drawing in space derived through generative evolution. It has adequate mass to be called an object, but expresses enough of a field function to be thought of as a place.

The idea is to internalise external conditions of weather, referencing the emergence of form from chaos that is both a cosmological and a biological principle. The sculpture engages and activates space in such a way that the moving body of the viewer reviews its own relationship with space at large.

DRIFT is an energy field containing a body-shaped void. What is seen and how it is seen is central to the function and meaning of the work. The total field of the work is 39.6 x 14.6 x 23 metres. 16,138 elements of 12.7 mm square stainless steel and 8,327 32 mm diameter balls are formed into packed polyhedra that follow bubble matrix geometry. Linked open cells can be seen in perspective in long sight lines running through the complex connective geometry of the work.

DRIFT is installed in the foyer of Marina Bay Sands Hotel, Singapore.
