Antony Gormley

WHITE CUBE AT ARLEY HALL & GARDENS, 2022

14 May - 29 August 2022

Arley's admired gardens, created over the last 270 years by successive generations of the same family, are the epitome of the English Country House garden, blending formality with a carefully cultivated wildness. The exhibition locates more than twenty works by artists including Antony Gormley, Tracey Emin, Isamu Noguchi, Cerith Wyn Evans and Danh Vo on their lawns, in ponds and woodland groves, surmounting the mellow brick walls, and on the beams of the Tudor barn.

Surmounting Arley's seventeeth-century garden walls, these open traceries, derived from a lived moment of human time, suggest conductors for lightning, receivers and transmitters, and express zones of exchange and transformation. One looks towards the horizon, another up into the sky and the third towards the ground.

Antony Gormley's DOMAIN sculptures are constructed of stainless steel bars of various lengths that terminate at the invisible perimeter of the body. 'I wanted to escape from the skin and superficial likeness in order to acknowledge the body more as a place than a thing', the artist explains. ' Each DOMAIN is an attempt to separate the subtle body from the material body; to abstract an attitude from the accidents of appearance and expose it to light and space'.
